Two Tools to Promote the Commercial Use of New Calling: Over 20 Million Users Developed in Three Quarters
5G New Calling is one of China Mobile's strategic products. It introduces the three key capabilities of UHD, intelligence, and interaction into the voice network. It was commercially launched in December2023, and more than 20 million users have subscribed the service by September2024.
The release of 5G New Calling for the vast number of users is a systematic project. Today's achievements are mainly due to the strategic positioning of Chine Mobile and two launch paths based on terminal readiness.
Two launch paths for New Calling facilitate business success.
Feng Shaorui, share that the first launch path is to provide users with intelligent call experience based on UHD video calls. User terminals only need to support ViLTE/ViNR video calls. China Mobile has launched six 5G New Calling applications, including Fun Calling, Real-Time Translation and Visualized Voice Calling, which are quite popular among the vast number of users.
The second launch path is to provide users with real-time interactive call experience based on the IMS Data Channel (DC) technology defined by 3GPP standards. China Mobile and ecosystem partners in the industry are actively building the DC terminal industry chain. China Mobile takes the lead in defining enterprise standard DC interfaces and developing SDKs. The DC protocol stack is implemented by chip vendors. Terminal manufacturers integrate the calling UI. In October 2023, China Mobile collaborated with Huawei to make the global first interactive call based on commercial networks. China Mobile is cooperating with chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm, MediaTek, Samsung, UNISOC, and Huawei HiSilicon, and terminal manufacturers such as Huawei, Honor, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo for the end-to-end technical verification. China Mobile will collaborate with partners to launch commercial terminals with 3GPP IMS DC capability soon.
Innovative Business Models Help Users and Ecosystem Partners Win-Win
China Mobile is also actively exploring and practicing innovative business models. While launching more 5G New Calling applications for users, partners in the ecological value chain can also benefit from them.
There are three business models for end users. One is offered as value-added services for every-day use scenario. The second is content-based operation, helping users show their personalities. The third type is integrated with existing services to enhance the experience. Diversified business models enable application developers, AI/AR capability providers, personalized content providers, and vertical industry users to gain benefits through capability interface calls or revenue sharing mechanisms.
AI+ New Calling Strategy Upgrades Intelligence Capabilities
Feng Shaorui, continued to talk about future service innovation, China Mobile has proposed the AI+ New Calling strategy, which will continue to enhance the intelligent capabilities of 5G New Calling.
China Mobile has built a flexible New Calling AI media capability platform, which can invoke both internal AI capabilities and third-party AI in the industry. Currently, the foundation model layer includes JIUTIAN language / voice foundation model developed by China Mobile and models from industry partners such as Qianwen and Spark.
Based on these capabilities, China Mobile provides users with innovative AI+5G New Calling applications, including Auto Transcription and Idol Calling. The call quality inspection platform built by China Mobile for express delivery industry partners such as Meituan and SF Express, can reduce the workload from one day to one hour, saving 90% of the corresponding expenses for customers.
Another upgrade direction is the call entry. China Mobile's call capabilities will continue to open up so that each app can easily use New Calling capabilities. Each call is a reliable call, and each call is an AI capability entry.
China Mobile Welcomes Partners to Build New Calling Industry Together
Finally, Feng Shaorui, called for the prosperity of the 5G New Calling industry to be inseparable from the joint efforts of the ecosystem partners. China Mobile has set up a joint service innovation taskforce to open up the new core capabilities of 5G New Calling to its partners. Ecosystem partners, including content, capability, application, and channel partners, are welcome to work together with China Mobile. Joint innovation and exploration of services and business models will continue to provide more UHD, intelligent, and interactive innovative applications for customers.
