Apple approaches China Unicom

Chinese news outlets are reporting that Apple and China Unicom, the country's second largest wireless carrier, are in talks to officially bring the iPhone to China, reports CNET News.

Partnering with China Unicom would mean Apple would not have to modify the iPhone's current wireless chip. China Mobile is rolling out a 3G network based on a proprietary home-grown wireless standard, while China Unicom and China Telecom, the second and third largest players in the market, are using the same WCDMA technology that other GSM-based carriers like AT&T are using. The iPhone could be available by 17 May, when China Unicom launches a 3G network.

Samsung readies mobile processor

Opening the door to true wireless sync for portable devices, Samsung has taken the wraps from the first handheld-sized processor with built-in support for the wireless USB standard, reports AppleInsider.

The unnamed processor joins a central ARM core with the new peripheral standard to pipe data at a real-life 120Mbps – more than twice as fast as existing wireless USB chipsets and fast enough to more closely imitate traditional, wired USB.

The system-on-a-chip implementation also has a built-in RAM controller as well as links for ordinary USB and could serve as a complete replacement CPU for devices that would otherwise need a cable to transfer large amounts of information across a short distance.

Intel downplays WiMax adoption

Questions have been raised about the long-term viability of WiMax in the US as it gears up for competition with LTE, a standard focused on upgrading the UMTS cellular network, reports InformationWeek.

Intel shifted focus of WiMax deployments to countries outside the US, where the wireless broadband technology has encountered obstacles that have slowed adoption.

With the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, taking place soon (16 to 19 February), Intel arranged a teleconference with reporters to provide 'news and progress' on WiMax deployments.
