MIIT: New IoT Terminals Will Not Use 2G/3G

Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China released "Notice on Further Promoting the Comprehensive Development of Mobile Internet of Things".

The overall goal of the "Notice" includes promoting the migration of 2G/3G Internet of things, establish a comprehensive mobile IoT ecosystem coordinating NB-IoT, 4G (including lTE-Cat1) and 5G, meet most of the needs in low-speed scenarios with Nb-IoT, meet medium-speed IoT and voice needs with lTE-Cat1 (hereinafter referred to as Cat1), and meet the high-speed and low-delay requirement with 5G technology.

According to the "Notice", by the end of 2020, the NB-IoT network will cover most urban areas of county-level or above, with deep coverage in key areas. The number of mobile IoT connections will reach 1.2 billion. The price of each NB-IoT module will be similar to the 2G module. New IoT terminals will be migrated to NB-IoT and Cat1. A number of NB-IoT application benchmarking projects and NB-IoT application scenarios with millions of connections will be built.

The notice requires strengthening the supervision on mobile IoT product access, to guide new IOT terminals stop using 2G/3G network, and promote the migration of the current 2G/3G IoT business to NB-IoT/4G (Cat1)/5G network. In addition, the "Notice" also proposes to accelerate the research on mobile IoT standards and technologies, and include NB-IoT standards in ITU IMT-2020 5G standards.
